He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and pursues his interests in topics such as complex optics, advanced intraocular lenses, corneal transplantation and refractive surgery. He was asked by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to author the refractive surgery chapter of the Eye Care Skills software, the primary source of content for teaching other physicians about new technologies in refractive surgery.

From 2009 to the present, the Consumers Research Council has named Dr. Maverick as one of “America’s Top Ophthalmologists,” and San Antonio Magazine has named Dr. Maverick as one of the “Best Physicians in San Antonio.” He has also named one of the “Best Doctors in America” for Ophthalmology by his peers according to Best Doctors, Inc., and year after year, he has been nominated as a “Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly.

Dr. Maverick is the first doctor in San Antonio to perform such advanced surgery as DSEK and DMEK. He and Dr. Lehmann are also among the most experienced surgeons with Visian ICLs, all-laser cataract surgery, and premium IOLs. Dr. Maverick was also the first surgeon in South Texas to perform the ICL and all-laser cataract (LenSx) surgeries.

He is the director of the San Antonio Eye Bank, and along with Dr. Lehmann, developed the first autologous serum tear program in the area for patients with severe dry eyes.

Dr. Maverick graduated with honors from Alamo Heights High School then attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Sciences. While at Notre Dame, he also acted as Sports Director at WVFI Radio, announcing Notre Dame sports and hosting a sports talk show.

After college, Dr. Maverick attended the University of Texas Medical School in Houston where his interest in ophthalmology began. Upon graduation with honors from medical school, he fulfilled a medical internship at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Saint Louis,

Dr. Maverick was accepted into the prestigious ophthalmology residency at Washington University in St. Louis, which consistently ranks in the top 10 programs for eye care and training, and in the top two institutions for eye research.

During his residency, he presented or published original research on intraocular lens calculations in children; the safety of refractive surgery/LASIK in scuba divers (Received ARVO award); bioterrorism and the eye; corneal mapping and the effect of intraocular pressure; and new chemotherapies for ocular pemphagoid.

Dr. Maverick was then invited for specialty training in the Corneal, External Disease and Refractive Surgery Fellowship program at Washington University. He was asked to join the clinical faculty as an instructor, and he also ran the Cornea Clinic at the Veterans Hospital in Saint Louis.

After his residency and fellowship in St. Louis, Dr. Maverick made the decision to return to San Antonio and join Focal Point Vision.

He is a scuba DiveMaster and pilot, but mostly enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.
