Areas of Care:
The founder, Dr. David Scales, was fortunate to obtain a diverse educational background while training as a physician. He graduated in 1982 from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences located in Bethesda, Maryland. His transitional internship (1983) encompassed broad based primary care oriented medical and surgical training at Malcolm Grow USAF Hospital. Following this (1983-1987) he was a Flight Surgeon at the USAF Academy Cadet Clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While practicing primary care with an emphasis in adolescent, sports medicine, occupational medicine, and flight medicine, Dr. Scales began to become interested in ophthalmology. He subsequently trained in Ophthalmology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas (1987-1990). He became a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1991, then received dual fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Uveitis/Ocular Immunology (1990-1992) at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He spent five years (1992-1997) as teaching staff in the Wilford Hall Ophthalmology Program and as the Chief Vitreoretinal Surgeon for the Air Force (1994-1997). During this period of time he was the only fellowship trained Uveitis Specialist in the Department of Defense. His last several years in the Air Force included working as an expert consultant in laser bio-effects, safety, and developing treatments for eye laser injuries at the United Sates Army Medical Research Detachment, Brooks AFB.
In 1997, Dr. Scales left the Air Force to found Retina and Uveitis Consultants of Texas, P.A. and make his dream of creating a modern ophthalmic environment built on solid clinical proficiency, cutting edge research, and technology a reality in southern Texas. Retina and Uveitis Consultants of Texas, P.A. is geared to become the premier regional treatment center for uveitis/ocular immunology, complicated retinal medical evaluations, and macular surgical techniques.
As a Board Certified Ophthalmologist with two years of fellowship training, Dr. Scales has over 15 years of ophthalmic subspecialty experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with difficult and complex Vitreoretinal and Uveitis problems. He has evaluated more than 46,000 patients, performing over 1200 major intra-ocular surgeries and 5000 laser procedures.
